Introduction to Business courses are available for grade 9 and 10 students as well as a business technology course where students can explore different software and technologies used in business. Senior students have an opportunity to explore courses in International business, marketing, entrepreneurship, and business leadership. As well as earn a college credit with our course on Financial Accounting Fundamentals, a dual credit in partnership with Fleming college.

Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset

In this course, students will learn what makes an entrepreneur thrive and the skills required to succeed in today’s business environment. Students will begin to develop their own entrepreneurial mindset, and learn why it’s important to take initiative, adapt to change, find creative solutions, and understand the financial considerations of entrepreneurship. This hands-on course will use business software and applications to help students plan and develop their entrepreneurial ideas and learn how to present them to a target audience. Throughout the course, students will enhance their communications skills as well as develop and refine their project management skills, including goal setting, time management, and networking.

This course introduces students to the world of business and what is required to be successful, ethical, and responsible in today’s economy. Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to be an entrepreneur who knows how to respond to local and global market opportunities. Throughout the course, students will explore and understand the responsibility of managing different functions of a business. This includes accounting, marketing, information and communication technology, financial management, human resources, and production.

Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. This course introduces the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services, and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. This course examines the importance of enterprising employees in today’s changing business environment. Students will also have an opportunity to demonstrate and develop enterprising skills by planning and organizing a school or community event.

This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions.This course expands students’ knowledge of sources of financing, further develops accounting methods for assets, and introduces accounting for partnerships and corporations.

Entrepreneurship: Venture Planning in an Electronic Age

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply entrepreneurial skills through the creation of a venture plan that capitalizes on the potential of e-commerce. Students will research and identify an opportunity for a venture. They will then complete the components of a venture plan that includes a website.
The Communications Technology program offers courses in graphic design, photography, video and film production, new media and animation. These courses are project based and allow students an opportunity to develop skills in various areas of TV and film production, graphic and print communications, new media and animation. Senior students can earn a college credit with our dual credit course in Interactive New Media and Animation.
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) SHSM allows students to build a foundation of skills and knowledge in the communications industry before embarking on their post secondary education. This SHSM focuses on communications systems, design software, digital media and computer technology with courses in tv & film, new media, animation and robotics. Students have an opportunity to participate in sector specific training that will better prepare them for their post secondary education whether it be in college, university or the workplace.
